Electricity - Distributed Temperature Sensing

Understanding the temperature profile of high voltage transmission lines is critically important to safety and efficiency in creating the Smart Grid necessary to meet the growing demand for electricity. Fully distributed temperature sensing (DTS) is now possible through state-of-the-art optical fibers for both medium and long distance applications.

Multimode for Raman interrogation: OFS offers a full suite of optical fiber products, both graded-index multimode for DTS measurements on spans up to 15 km. These fibers are optimized for compatibility with traditional Raman-based DTS interrogators and utilize coating and cable constructions that are suitable for use in applications up to 125 ˚C.

Single-mode for Brillouin interrogation: For lengths up to 60 km, OFS provides a single-mode solution that is compatible with Brillouin detection, offering a single Brillouin peak profile in a range of products suited to transmission cable manufacturing exposure and continuous operation at temperatures as high as 125 ˚C.
