Quality Materials Engineer – Carrollton, GA

OFS Fitel, LLC, a global manufacturer of fiber optics cable and apparatus, is seeking a QA Materials Engineer for its Cable Division located in Carrollton, Georgia, approximately 50 miles west of Atlanta. (Website: www.ofsoptics.com)

Job Summary

The Quality Materials Engineer is responsible for all Carrollton incoming raw material quality testing, inspection plans, specifications, and for ensuring that all test procedures meet national or international standards. Works with process engineering, R&D PLM and the Global Quality and Technical Engineer to ensure proper validation and testing are completed for new raw materials and work with procurement to address supplier quality issues leading to disqualification if needed. Must be a strong champion of SAFETY! Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support to Operations, Engineering, etc. on material problems.
  • Provide technical support to Product Management, Technical Services, etc. on material and related issues.
  • Interface with suppliers to drive root cause analysis and corrective actions on supplier raw material issues.
  • Support the OFS Carrollton Safety program.
  • Lead and support Small Group Activities (SGA’s) and Continuous Improvement Events.
  • Attends production meetings as applicable.
  • Work with R&D for proper qualification of new raw materials.
  • Support on site supplier audits (domestic or international) as needed.
  • Work with R&D for proper qualification of new raw materials.
  • Regularly meet with vendors, procurement and R&D to review technical issues and qualification of new materials and outsourced cables.
  • Acquire MSDS for all new materials and report the information to the Environmental Health & Safety Engineer/Manager before the materials arrive.
  • Supervise Receiving Inspection Technician.
  • Work with R&D and Process Engineering to manage change control to existing raw materials.
  • Work with R&D, Process/Product Development Engineers to develop test methods and parameters for raw materials.
  • Support Product Qualification process during the testing of new products.
  • Understanding of mechanical, environmental, and optical testing test procedures (FOTP, IEC, etc.).
  • Reviews technical reports to ensure that all necessary testing is completed and passing results achieved.
  • Work with R&D to provide raw material specifications for new materials.
  • Provide Information Systems with information regarding new materials.
  • Work with QA, Process Engineering, Operations, and Final Inspection during the pilot production phase of new raw materials to verify process capability and performance.
  • Maintain existing raw material specifications.
  • Understand and work within the TL-9000 Quality Management System.
  • Maintain Supplier Quality metrics.
  • Develops inspection plans for raw materials.

Additional Duties:

  • Fundamental understanding of the plant Quality Management System.
  • Cross train with Quality Engineering and Final Inspection Supervisor and provide coverage as needed.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • One to five years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Office, Statistical software.
  • Laboratory or other hands on materials testing experience.
  • Project Management skills.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) and ASQ Certified Supplier Quality Engineer certifications within three years.
