| Technical Topics: NZDF Fiber for Distributed Raman Amplification |
Distributed Raman amplification, the technology used to increase the span reach in 10 and 40 Gb/s systems, can cut overall system cost significantly, in part by reducing the number of amplifiers in the network. Installing transmission fibers that have been designed and optimized to take full advantage of Raman technology allows system designs with higher capacity and lower cost. TrueWave® REACH Fiber from OFS is optimized for distributed Raman amplification. Get the full story.

| Application Notes: Bend-Insensitive Fiber for Premises, FTTx |
Modern networks are pushing fiber to the home and desk, where the aggressive demands on cable, along with smaller distribution cabinets and compact fiber management systems, require a greater degree of fiber bending performance. These applications have led OFS to develop a new bend-insensitive optical fiber, AllWave® FLEX Zero Water Peak (ZWP) Fiber, optimized for access and enterprise networks. As a premises-market complement to OFS’ LaserWave® Multimode Fiber, our standard offering for applications up to 750 meters, AllWave FLEX Fiber has all the advantages of OFS’ industry-leading AllWave ZWP Fiber, as well as additional bend-related performance advantages over standard single-mode fiber. Ask the Experts: Polarization Mode Dispersion |
What is PMD and how can I reduce its effect on single-mode fiber performance? |
| |
Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) is a serious problem that can limit distances and data rates in an optical fiber system. PMD is a time varying quantity that degrades system bandwidth and is costly to mitigate. Further complicating matters, PMD is a random, statistically based phenomenon and is often measured improperly. Engineers, consultants, and end users should specify fiber that has been designed and manufactured specifically to reduce PMD in the cable, to support current and future application speeds with low system cost and high reliability.
