R&D Process Engineer – Norcross, GA


Leads the design of optical fiber, reduction to prototypes and validation of design and process robustness for commercialization.  Possesses expert level knowledge of Vapor Deposition process for optical fiber manufacturing.  Leads design reviews to thoroughly assess the ability of proposed designs to meet specified requirements, including manufacturability and cost targets.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for planning and hands-on execution of new optical fiber development related to roadmap programs and advanced technology developments
  • Responsible for the hands-on advancement of the fiber fabrication process to enable manufacturing of the new designs in volume and at cost targets
  • Responsible for complex data analysis based on fiber measurements to perform the requisite modifications to fiber design to achieve the desired performance
  • Accountable for benchmarking and delivering intellectual property generation and documentation
  • Support Operations/Manufacturing in continuous improvements and troubleshooting of optical fiber fabrication process
  • Analyze new technology and make appropriate recommendations as to equipment replacement and/or modifications to meet/exceed evolving market needs
  • Responsible for transfer, documentation, training and safety reviews of process enhancements to Engineering and Manufacturing
  • Work effectively in a team environment and with partners/vendors/customers on product, process, specification, and technical topics
  • Ability to work under high pressure and manage challenging internal and external deadlines


  • A Bachelor’s , Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Optics/Optical Engineering or equivalent
  • Knowledge of singlemode optical fiber design, mode propagation, gas delivery systems, material incorporation, and refractive index control is a plus
  • A wide degree of creativity and diversity is expected. Six Sigma Black Belt or equivalent is considered a plus

Preferred Skills:

  • Expert knowledge of singlemode fiber development, including refractive index control, attenuation and glass geometry
  • Excellent analytical and experimental skills involving design of experiments, troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Experience in the VAD process for singlemode optical fiber fabrication
  • Proficiency in waveguide modeling theory, and C/C++ and MATLAB
  • Excellent documentation, communication, and presentation skills to both internal teams and external partners/customers
