The OFS central research Lab is looking for a self-motivated and energetic automation and controls engineer to support programs in the research and development of optical fiber and fiber-based devices.  The position is located in Somerset, NJ.

The successful applicant will develop, build and improve equipment and processes used for fabrication of glass-based optical fiber, including optimization of established methods and development of new fabrication and measurement processes. They will identify suitable current technology solutions that can be integrated with existing equipment as well as explore new approaches.

Qualified candidates must be actively enrolled in master’s degree or higher, preferably in Electrical Engineering.  Other relevant competencies and experience include:

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications skills. Teamwork is a fundamental strength of the group and ease of collaboration is essential. Focus is on collaborative successes and not the individual.
  • Self-starter with the ability to take on and learn new skills in a rapid fashion with high motivation and enthusiasm. Collaborations will be developed within the local teams and with other company locations.
  • Must have a passion for troubleshooting and developing/building new processes.
  • Proficiency in programming industrial equipment. PLC/HMI programming and LabVIEW experience is beneficial.
  • Experience in assembling and interfacing with remote hardware such as motors and I/O signals is beneficial.
  • Diverse software skills are a plus such as (e.g. Java, Python, C, C#, SQL, VB)
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Sound documentation processes and practice is essential.
