How to Speak “Fiber Geek” Article 2 – Critical Optical Parameters

Welcome back, Fiber Geeks! In our first issue, we examined how wavelength use has grown over the past 30 years. Given the explosive demand for bandwidth, it is reasonable to assume that the next three decades will require many more wavelengths, with potential applications across the entire optical spectrum.

In this second installment, we’ll start by focusing on critical optical parameters beginning with attenuation (fiber loss). In most situations, attenuation is the most important network parameter. We’ll also take a look at scattering, absorption and bending (the primary loss mechanisms in optical fiber) and learn how a thorough understanding of attenuation can help in network planning and installation.
